Why bowhunt?
Do we all still remember why we took up bowhunting? “When choosing the bow and arrow as a hunting weapon, the bowhunter makes a conscious decision to forget many of the advantages modern technology offers in the area of equipment. As a consequence, the bowhunter needs to develop the skills necessary to approach and hunt the quarry at ranges much closer than the animal’s normal reaction/escape distance.
“Further, the bowhunter needs to select, maintain and become proficient with equipment appropriate to the game hunted. Bowhunters are committed and ethical outdoor enthusiasts. They have chosen a deeper natural experience that requires more time to harvest the quarry, much like the angler who chooses fly casting and the challenges it brings. Challenge is the major reason for bowhunting. “A challenging way to hunt” or “requires more skill” consistently top the list of reasons why people take up bowhunting.”

European Bowhunting Federation (EBF)
Due to SABA’s partnering with the European Bowhunting Federation earlier this year, SABA is now officially affiliated to more than 20 European national bowhunting organisations.
At the EBA general assembly, held in Italy this year, a decision was taken to change the name and logo. Previously the word Association was used, but this has been converted to a more correct nomenclature, to wit Federation. Thus the future name of the organisation will be European Bowhunting Federation and the abbreviation will be EBF .

SABA and the New Archer
At SABA we only use three-dimensional (3D) life-size African  animals at broadhead shoots, as we try to simulate hunting conditions as closely as possible.  We believe one should be knowledgeable about the game one is planning to hunt as regards size and – most importantly – shot placement. When practising with broadheads on life-size animals, the aspiring hunter also experiences the difference in the flight of an arrow when a broadhead is added. Our objective with the broadhead shoots is to educate hunters to be confident and prepared when going on a hunt.
2D is great for target archery, but as you can see from the pictures this cannot be reproduced effectively on a 2D butt. You lose the size of the animals, which is critical in shot placement and distance judging if on a walk and stalk (see pic 1)

SABA and less privileged children
On 17 July an event for the children of the Louis Botha Home for Children in Pretoria was held at The Bowshop in Pretoria. After being shown the basics the children started shooting with the Genesis bows supplied by SABA. Initially the arrows did not hit where they were aimed, but the children quickly progressed and after teams were set up it turned out a truly fun day with good groupings being shot. The competition between the kids was fierce and they did not want to put the bows down. The day was a great success and will definitely be repeated. We would like to thank the following sponsors:
•    Leonie and the personnel of The Bowshop, who were friendly and professional at all times.
•    Clive von Kerckhoven, owner of Suzuki Bramley, who at short notice decided to be part of this event and supplied all the caps.
•    Brilliant Shine Panel Beaters, who supplied the cooler bags.
•    Frikkie and Denise Stone, who supplied cold drinks and refreshments for everyone.
•    Nico Kritzinger, Henfre’ Nel, Mark Strydom and Evan Vermaak, who ensured a safe exercise.
•    The Golden Eagle Spur, for the lunch they provided.

It was a real delight and pleasure to work with the children – such good manners and appreciation! We thank you all as well.
Donations to the Louis Botha Children’s Home are welcome. Interested parties should get in touch with Fred Fourie at (083) 776-8895.
