Leading article / Choosing a compound bow – part 2

BowCleve Cheney continues his series on choosing the correct compound bow. In this article he looks at cam design and arrow speed.

Everyone (or most people, that is) wants to shoot the “fastest bow” on the market. Before getting into the nitty gritty, it is important that we become familiar with advertised bow speeds so that you are not misled by advertising propaganda. In the archery industry speed sells, and the 300-feet-per-second barrier is the sort of benchmark many beginners to the sport desire or expect from their bow. The neophyte is often disgruntled by the fact that he cannot get his bow to shoot at the velocities advertised in some glossy bowhunting magazine. The problem could be attributed to IBO velocity ratings ...

Danie Rossouw – die Bok wat boogjag

DanieDanie Rossouw, the well-known Springbuck and Blue Bull rugby player, recently visited Africa’s Bowhunter and told interviewer Redge Grant about his passion for nature and bowhunting. This of course created quite a stir at the office. Danie has no less than three Currie Cup titles behind his name, as well as two Super Rugby titles, a Tri-nations title, and a world cup and series victory over the British and Irish Lions. We were impressed by his friendly nature and humility – and most of all how much he loves hunting and being in the bush.

Suid-Afrikaanse boogskuts skitter in Duitsland

DuitslandDie Wêreldkampioenskap in Veldboogskiet (WFAC) is vroeg vandeesmaand in Dahn, Duitsland gehou.

BenitoBenito van Leeuwen, bowhunter with a formidable reputation, reveals his method for judging the distance to a 3D target

A quick guide to bowhunting impala

Shot pacementFor the benefit of those readers who would like to have quick references on hunting their favourite animals, Cleve Cheney presents condensed versions of his earlier full-length articles on bowhunting various species

Hunting techniques
Impala can “jump” the string, so a fast arrow is recommended. They can be hunted using walk-and-stalk and spot-and-stalk methods, or can be shot from a tree stand or hide. Shooting at a drinking point is usually a good option. Impala have good hearing, smell and vision. Camouflage hunting clothing strongly recommended. Approach downwind ...

Testing the Martin Pantera

Test1The first of a series of articles Africa’s Bowhunter intends producing on bows it will be  testing.

There are many bows on the market made by well-known bow manufacturers such as Martin, Mathews, Hoyt, Bowtech, Elite PSE, Bear, Alpine and others. Most of the bows in the top ranges of these manufacturers are excellent instruments and there is little to choose between these models. Most of these bows, if set up correctly and used with the right arrow and broadhead, would send an arrow traveling some metres after exiting an animal’s vitals. It might well be that a specific bow is chosen by a bowhunter purely for personal reasons – because it’s his or her specific preference. The tests Africa’s Bowhunter is doing are certainly not perfect and will surely change as we progress – and the purpose of the tests is by no means ...

SpeenvarkieD’Uard van Zyl writes about hunting a bush pig at night during a winter’s evening in northern Natal, and tells how he had to squat down on his haunches until he lost all sensation in his legs.

So ook net ná oestyd.
In Piet Retief hier in Noord-Natal was ’n boog ’n paar jaar terug nog iets waarvan kinders prentjies geteken het in die geskiedenisklas. “Boog wat?” het Deon my gevra. “Boogjag,” het ek geantwoord. “Ja, ek wil ’n vark met die boog jag. Sal jy my help?” ..
